He screwed his eyes tightly in an attempt to shut out the unwelcome morning light. But he could feel the light dancing on his eyelids, and even though he couldn't see it anymore, he knew it was there. Realizing that it was futile to deny that morning had arrived, he slid off his straw pallet to go outside and greet it. He found an earthen pot, brushed a few spiders off it, and set out to the village well to fill it. The early morning stillness was shattered by a voice that was evidently used to barking orders out to him.
